Being able to go out in the field each day and experience something different that the Manu Rainforest had to offer up [was the best part of the program], especially seeing endangered species like the woolly monkeys twice in the same day!! Go into the program with an open mind as this trip will cause you to see the world in a different way, which will bring a new found perspective.

Rainforest Environmental Conservation in Peru

An amazing experience… was involved in both new skills and life skills I will take with me later through life. [The best part was] being involved in a research program actually in the Amazon, that has a goal of a sustainable future. Definitely undertake this program.

Rainforest Environmental Conservation in Peru

The best part of the experience was living abroad and getting to meet all these new people who all shared the same interests – it made everything so much more fun. Do the tourist stuff, because it is absolutely marvelous, and take the time to really learn about the history of the place. Take each day as a new learning experience, the people you will meet are all going to be fantastic and above all have fun.

January in Dublin, London, Stratford and Oxford

Do not hesitate to go on this trip – it is absolutely fabulous. I really enjoyed seeing the sights that were relatable to what we had been discussing in class, e.g. William Shakespeare’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon. I loved the time we spent in Oxford. Walking around the city and just looking at the architecture was a really good experience. The museums and galleries in London are a definite must!

Doing it homestay style is definitely the best way to do it, they are a big source of knowledge and my nanay is one of the best people I have ever met. The program was so interesting – we really learned about some of the struggles faced by the people there.

Community Development in the Philippines

This has honestly been such an amazing experience. There isn’t anything I can fault. The entire placement was one amazing day after another. July in Barcelona, Spain

Do it, it is a great chance to see the various behaviours of rhinos that you probably won’t see by just going on a safari. Also all the staff are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. It is also a good opportunity to talk to local workers that I don’t think I would have experienced as a general tourist.

Wildlife Conservation and Rhino Research in Uganda

Do it. It was the best and most rewarding experience of my life. Be confident and throw yourself into the healthcare work. It’s unlike any healthcare experience you will get in Australia. It is very confronting at times, but the work you do in Livingstone always feels genuinely appreciated by the locals. It was so rewarding and you felt like you were making an impact on people’s lives. Always treat your patients with respect and kindness, they are some of the happiest people you will meet 🙂 I was so lucky to be able to go on this trip. I met some of the most amazing people. I learnt invaluable lessons from the Zambian locals. I made lifelong friends from across the globe in the other volunteers I was living with. I was a tearful mess when I had to leave!

Community Healthcare and Development in Zambia

A once in a lifetime opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of Shakespeare and the environment in which his plays were written and performed. Absolutely fantastic excursions and activities, a wealth of knowledge and experience. Grasp the opportunity with both hands, it may never come again. Thank you to CIS for organising the experience. I am eternally grateful to all involved for making this experience possible.

January in Dublin, London, Stratford and Oxford

Being able to stay at home stays was amazing, as you really got to live like a Filipino. Be open minded about what you are going to do. Prepare games to play in the classroom with the students. Big Five Wildlife Management and Conservation in South Africa

By far the most amazing experience of my life. Have gained so much from it and have grown as a person. Be prepared for an amazing but physically and mentally challenging experience. Be ready to work hard and give your all under difficult conditions. The experience and rewards you gain will be worth the hard work you put in.

Rainforest Environmental Conservation in Peru

Best experience of my life. Being able to see amazing wild animals every single day was awesome. There’s nothing to lose by doing this program, only to gain knowledge, extraordinary memories and amazing experiences. CISaustralia made my dream come true by allowing me to work on a safari in Africa. Thank you so much for the amazing opportunity.

Big Five Wildlife Management and Conservation in South Africa

Just do it, don’t be scared. I had never gone overseas before this and I doubt I will ever top it. You make everlasting friendships with not only the other volunteers but your host organization are the most amazing people who will take you in as if you are apart of their family. It is a fantastic experience to learn about how things are done in a different country and you wake up to lions roaring in the morning, what could possibly be better than that? Oh and a warning, you won’t want to come home. Thank you CIS! This has been the best thing I have ever done in my life.

DO IT! It will be an eye opening experience that you will never forget, it gives you a whole new perspective on the world that is not possible without visiting Africa. Also the people you will meet and friends you make will last you a lifetime. The program was incredible. The people lovely and I felt right at home. The staff in Livingstone were always really happy to help and provide as much extra assistance and help as we needed.

Community Healthcare and Development in Zambia

Go for it! I wasn’t too sure at the start and threw myself into it and it was the best decision I made. I made friendships which I’m sure will last a lifetime and I had experiences which have/will motivate me with the direction of my prospective career as a Social Worker and me personally in my everyday life. It’s confronting, exciting, challenging, emotional and definitely unlike anything else. Loved it! Want to do it again.

Community Healthcare and Development in Zambia

DO IT! Volunteering in Zambia was one of the best experiences of my life. Thanks to CISaustralia, I had the opportunity to travel to remote villages in Zambia and provide healthcare to some of the poorest and most vulnerable people I have ever encountered. As a final year nursing student, the experience was invaluable. I met people with diseases that are not prevalent (or are under control) in Australia, such as HIV/AIDS, and learnt more about how these diseases are treated and how people cope. I met and worked alongside dedicated health professionals and my fellow Deakin students. We have formed lifelong friendships from our shared experiences.

Community Healthcare and Development in Zambia

Do it! Make sure you take time to learn the language and get to know people while you’re there. Just dive into it and go with the flow – don’t let yourself stay stuck in an Australian mindset that everything has to run on time. Eat Thai food and avoid Western food!

Rural Community Healthcare in Thailand

Do it. One month of pure environmental beauty and freedom from technology. Outstanding program with amazing people doing an amazing thing for the rain forest and global environment.

If you’re interested in biology and enjoy immersing yourself in foreign (less-industrialised) cultures that have an ancient history of civilisation, then this is the placement for you. Experiencing the Amazonian Tropical Rainforest, assisting scientific research that contributes to its protection, and engaging with local scientists, students and the local community [were the best parts].

This was one of the most incredible life experiences I have been lucky enough to participate in. The people, the place, the town and the culture [are] all something to be admired. Every opportunity [is] exciting and engaging.

The experience in Barcelona was the best time in my life. Thank you so much CISaustralia for an amazing experience 🙂 I loved exploring Barcelona and making new friends with the girls in my apartment that I was living with. See as much of Barcelona as possible. Get involved in everything and do as many cultural activities as you possibly can while you are on your international experience.

Any program is made by the people you experience it with and I was extremely lucky to have met some amazing people from my roommates, to the CIS onsite staff who helped make the program run so smoothly, to my teacher for the 3 week period who was able to keep all of us students interested and eager to learn. Just go for it. You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. Why turn down a great experience?

January in Barcelona, Spain

Every second is incredible. From waking up to lions roaring in the early hours of the morning, to seeing a lion hunt in the dark of night on the plains. The program not only changes your perspective on things, but it makes you better yourself. You work hard, and you achieve a lot. You help an organisation that is just as passionate about wildlife and its conservation as you are. The guides want to help you learn so so much, be open to their wisdom. But most of all, prepare for the greatest adventure of your life. You will make friendships that will last a lifetime, and see things most people only dream of. This experience changed my life, I hope you’re ready for it to do the same for you.

It’s amazing!! Just do it and you’ll have an awesome time! The staff are all super friendly and fantastic people and passionate about what they do. This made my time much more enjoyable as I learnt a lot of new things. I wouldn’t pick anywhere else to do a month abroad. If you want to scuba dive and learn about the underwater life, definitely go to Koh Tao!

Marine Conservation in Thailand

Getting the experience of what I want my future career to be and seeing if this really is the field I want to go into [was the best part]. Swimming with the turtles [and] finally seeing this amazing creature like within arms length of me was just indescribable. Go with an open mind but be prepared to get exhausted and work hard. It was challenging and amazing and 100% worth it but you truly get out what you put in.

Marine Conservation in Thailand

Getting to learn new skills that was relatable to my degree [was the best part]. Even though it is so close to Australia, New Zealand is very different in it’s own way and the program and location are just fantastic.

Environmental Sustainability in New Zealand

The highlight of the volunteer experience was most certainly working directly with the turtles, feeling responsible and capable of undertaking the work required to ensure the conservation of sea turtles at this particular location.

Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica

I loved going to Peru for the program. Cusco was not a place I thought I’d visit but I’m glad I did because the city was beautiful. I really loved the location of the program itself, it was a great experience going so far from major cities and immersing ourselves in the rainforest. I love the outdoors and being in the Amazon was amazing.

Community Healthcare and Development in Zambia

The best part was the team that we volunteered with and the healthcare work that we did. The most exciting travel experience for me was working in the clinics and gaining experience in dealing with medical situations with limited equipment. It was also awesome being given the flexibility and opportunity to be put on different volunteer projects, like building or teaching. I learned a lot in so many different projects run in the community.

Community Healthcare and Development in Zambia

The feeling that you get after seeing your contribution to these people’s lives is so unique and fulfilling. Those huge smiles and gratefulness is something that you can look forward to. Embrace yourself in the culture [and] don’t be scared to try and speak the language.

Community Development in the Philippines

I have changed my perspective as a person. I believe that seeing the other side of life made me realise how lucky I am. I have became more appreciative of things. All students please volunteer once in your life. It will change your perspective… I learnt to become more humble.

Choose it. You are in a great location with a heap of things to do. The team you are working with is great and the communities you help are wonderfully appreciative. Having to utilise my Spanish regularly was a challenge but very worthwhile.

It definitely is worth it, the locations you go and the people you meet are amazing. [The best part was] definitely the people that I volunteered with and the sense of support that we were given. There was never a moment that I felt that I wasn’t supported or cared for. All needs were always met.

Rural Community Development in Nepal

The experience we got in the medical clinic was incredible and our homestay family was amazing. The experience we got in the medical clinics was an experience we would not be able to get in Australia. All the doctors and nurses assisting us were such lovely, patient people that were always happy to help. Take part in every experience offered to you and be as open-minded as possible. You will only regret not accepting new opportunities.

Rural Community Healthcare in Thailand

Go with an open mind and open arms. It’s amazing and life changing to be so immersed in another culture – getting to know the locals and their way of life – and I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity.

Leadership and Cultural Development in Thailand

[The best part was] broadening my world view; before starting this program I had preconceived ideas on Thailand. I’m pleased to say that these were challenged and that I learnt much about Thailand, its culture and international business relations. Be open to the experiences, have fun and let yourself go which will let your perspectives grow.

Leadership and Cultural Development in Thailand

DO IT!! It is an absolutely life-changing adventure. You will make so many lifelong friends and learn so much about the marine environment, as well as learn a lot about who you are as a person. The [on-site] team are so knowledgeable and are doing absolutely everything in their power to conserve both natural and artificial reefs so future generations can witness them the same, if not better than we can today.

If I had the chance I would definitely do this program again!

I loved being able to immerse myself in a new culture that I was unfamiliar with. All of the people that we worked alongside, that we taught and that we met were absolutely beautiful. I loved being able to serve in such a beautiful community alongside such great people.

I am so glad I made the leap in applying to [this] program. I feel as if my placement has helped in my personal growth as well as guiding my future career ambitions. The best part about my time abroad was the places I got to experience with my teammates. The North Island of New Zealand is truly incredible!

To anyone considering this program I highly recommend it. The whole trip and program was incredible, and an experience I will never forget. Probably the best part was just how rewarding it felt to be saving these turtles and knowing that my actions were having a positive impact on the environment and the future. Also all the new people and friends I met on this trip was amazing, couldn’t have done it without them. This trip confirmed for me that this is the kind of thing I want to be doing in the future.

Do it! It will be an amazing experience that will teach you so much about yourself and about the rainforest. The program was amazing because we were able to be completely hands-on with all of the research. I loved being out in the field, immersed in nature and seeing so many different and exciting critters!

Just go for it, it’s an amazing experience being up close to the wild animals and feels good to do conservation work to continue to let the reserve thrive. A bonus was making some life long friendships from people around the world.

Had such an amazing experience. The rangers and the rest of the volunteers were amazing and the work we got the opportunity to do was really fulfilling. I loved going out into the reserve for game drives and game counts and I enjoyed some of the maintenance work we did including cactus clearing and tree chopping. You get to work with amazing people, make incredible friends and see some of the best animals in the world out in the wild.

DO IT! Had such an amazing experience. The [on-site staff] were so helpful and kind and encouraging. The rangers at the reserve were so knowledgeable and made a real connection with all the volunteers, making time to teach us and answer questions as well as get to know us personally. The work we did was amazing.

Do it, it will be more life changing than you could ever imagine. It was honestly the most amazing experience and one that’s going to help me with future employment. Getting the hands on experience and seeing what it’s like to work as a professional [was the best part].

Just do it. It will be the most amazing experience and the best thing that you can do for not only yourself, but for a community in need. The people that I got to meet as well as being able to help out and see a difference [was the best part].

The beautiful backdrop of Barcelona [was the best part]! The history of the city combined with the gorgeous Mediterranean weather created the perfect location to live and study. Be brave and just go for it, even it seems like it’s out of your comfort zone, the experience is definitely worth it and you’ll have the time of your life.

July in Barcelona, Spain

Meeting new people and exploring a foreign environment [was the best part]. The entire experience was phenomenal for my own personal growth and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. Very friendly staff who made me feel comfortable and reassured me.

Take every opportunity you can and be as interested as you can. The project leaders and rangers are so full of knowledge which they are happy to share with you. The best part was being immersed in a different culture and doing hands on work every day. The days can be tiring and the night shifts can be long, but when you have an open mind (along with a speaker and some tunes during the day work) it is the best fun!

Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica

Simply being about [and] experiencing another country that doesn’t speak English as the first language [was the best part]. The whole conservation time was exceptional and really resonated to show me how much help the environment needs.

Kind, friendly, enthusiasm, considerate, careful, the service and the assistance are the most outstanding in my opinion. The work placement program was the best part of my internship. It will help me a lot in my future and I found plenty experiences to learn. I really enjoyed it.

Take the risk and do it! You will meet the best people who you will love like family, and see and do the most amazing things. If you want to learn as much as possible about the wildlife then don’t hesitate to ask as many questions as possible – the [Rangers] know so much information!

Do it! Uganda is a great country to visit. The people are extremely friendly, the culture is completely different to Australia and so interesting to learn about, the landscapes are breathtaking and the animals are beautiful. Visiting Uganda really put into perspective the importance of conservation across the world and also showed me how intense the work is, but very rewarding.

Wildlife Conservation and Rhino Research in Uganda

Such a rewarding and eye opening experience, you meet such amazing people and everyday is different. The home base care was my favourite part as all our clients were lovely and cheerful no matter what their circumstances were, it was also great to be able to give back to the communities.

I had the wonderful experience of volunteering in Uganda earlier this year… Myself and several other Deakin students, plus two people we met while volunteering in Uganda, have raised USD $5,000 to name a baby rhino! …We chose his name [Jabali] as it means ‘inner strength’ – in light of our current global pandemic. He’s apparently doing well with mum Bella & has already started trying to play with his much larger sibling.

Do it! It was the best experience of my life and you’ll meet people from all over the world and leave knowing you’ve made a massive difference to the refuge and the sea turtles.

The whole thing was amazing but the best part was the game drives and the weekend excursions. Step out of your comfort zone and apply, experiences like these do not come up often.

The interaction with the organisation involved [was the best part]… really accurate to the bachelor I am studying and made me analyse the possibilities in the work field relating to my studies. The interaction with the reptiles guided by the keeper who taught us how to handle them [was my most exciting experience].

Native Australian Wildlife in the Tropics in Queensland

I had a great time… The skills I learnt and work I got to do was right up my alley. The people were fantastic to work with and I made some great friends with the other volunteers. The hands-on experience and the real work we got to do [was the best part]. There were so many opportunities for animal handling and I learnt a lot through asking questions and having discussions with the keepers and trainees. The wildlife in Tropical North Queensland is a lot different to that of Victoria and it was great to experience it.

Native Australian Wildlife in the Tropics in Queensland

Overall an amazing experience working with a group of passionate people and connecting with people within the field… The best part would probably have been the community meeting where we presented all of our scientific data to the community and shared thoughts and ideas about Raymond Island’s local koala population. What we were doing felt like we were changing the future and not only that, it had a sense of professionalism to it by talking to the community.

Koala Conservation and Research in Victoria

Definitely take the opportunity given to you and do it. You never know how it may help you in the future. Learning the skills and meeting awesome likeminded people [was the best part].

Talk to everyone you can – this is an incredible opportunity to network with people. Meeting and networking with people who have similar interests as I do [was the best part]. Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef [was the most exciting experience].
