Rainforest Environmental Conservation in Peru
Embark on an immersive journey with our Rainforest Environmental Conservation project in Peru’s Manu Biosphere Reserve in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. As students volunteer, they’ll become integral parts of biodiversity monitoring efforts, collaborating with local communities and international partners to preserve the Amazon’s precious ecosystems. Student’s engage in hands-on activities such as transects and surveys, contributing directly to vital conservation initiatives while soaking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the region. Destination Highlight: The Amazon Rainforest generates 20% of the world’s oxygen and shelters an astonishing 390 billion individual trees, representing around 16,000 different species. Despite its remarkable biodiversity, less than 1% of the Amazon’s plant and animal species have been thoroughly studied by researchers.
Community Development and Environmental Change in Peru
Students are fully immersed in our Cusco program, where they’ll spend 2-4 weeks working with the local community to create environmentally sustainable kitchen structures and bio gardens. Joining international volunteers from around the world, students will help build cleaner burning stoves, sustainable greenhouses and ecological refrigerators. These projects aren’t just about construction; they’re about empowering communities and fostering lasting change. Students gain valuable skills in communication, project management, and cultural understanding as they work side by side with local leaders and organisations. Additionally, Lake Titicaca, situated on the border of Peru and Bolivia, holds the distinction of being the highest navigable lake globally, revered by indigenous communities as a sacred site.
Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica
Further north, in Latin America, student’s can dive into the captivating world of sea turtle conservation on the pristine Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This unique program offers a chance for students to contribute meaningfully to the protection of endangered sea turtles while experiencing the rugged beauty of a protected natural environment. Volunteers can anticipate a dynamic work environment, with tasks ranging from beach patrols to assisting with hatchery operations. Students should be ready for active days and nights, sometimes at odd hours, with the reward of seeing these incredible creatures thrive. Academic benefits include hands-on conservation work, data collection, and learning about sea turtle behaviour.
