Program Highlight: Child Protection as a Global Issue Study Tour
Recently, CISaustralia partnered with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to curate a customised program led by Prof. Kelly Richards and A/Prof. Jodi Death. This immersive program offered students a unique opportunity to explore the complexities of global child protection issues through a combination of academic learning and hands-on experiences.
The tour’s key objectives centred on building students’ intercultural capabilities and fostering a deep sense of cultural humility, while simultaneously enhancing their professional practice. Participants engaged in collaborative projects, honed their communication skills, and delved into the intricacies of criminal justice systems and governance frameworks. These activities helped them reflect on the critical role of justice professionals in global contexts, particularly as they considered the rule of law in relation to governance, development, and their future careers.
One of the most significant aspects of this program was the opportunity to visit a variety of NGOs in Cambodia. These visits provided students with firsthand insight into how different organisations address child protection in a local context. The experience not only broadened their understanding of child protection but also allowed them to see the tangible impact that dedicated professionals can have in this field.
Beyond the academic content, students were also able to immerse themselves in Cambodian culture. A fun and engaging cooking class brought moments of lightheartedness and team bonding to balance the heavier subject matter, while visits to historical sites like the iconic Angkor Wat added a rich cultural layer to the program.
This study tour provided an invaluable blend of academic, cultural, and professional development, leaving students with lasting insights into the global child protection landscape. No doubt, this learning experience will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on students!
