From Zambia with Impact: Why Volunteering Abroad is the Ultimate Uni Adventure
Dreaming of an adventure that also builds your career skills and makes a real difference? Volunteering in Zambia might just be the life-changing experience you’re looking for. We chatted with Sander, the site director in Livingstone, to hear about the incredible impact of these programs—for both the community and the volunteers who join them.
Meet Sander: Originally from the Netherlands, Sander is passionate about supporting community-driven projects and creating lasting change.
Q: Sander, how did you end up in Zambia, and what’s your role in the volunteer programs?
I first came to Livingstone as a volunteer in 2014, and I fell in love with the community. A year later, I returned as a staff member, and now I’m the Base Manager. My job is to support the long-term projects we run here with the help of amazing volunteers.
Q: What makes these volunteer programs special?
The impact. Each program is designed in collaboration with the local community to address their unique needs and create lasting change. Unlike many organisations that send teams to complete a project and then leave, our programs take a different approach. We work closely with the local team on the ground to ensure that when volunteers join for a short-term placement, they’re contributing to long-term, ongoing projects that truly matter.
Whether it’s community healthcare, environmental sustainability, or women’s empowerment, these initiatives are making a real difference. Volunteers aren’t just here for a fleeting experience—they’re part of something bigger, helping to create meaningful, lasting change in the community.
Q: What can students expect to gain from volunteering?
So much! First, the hands-on experience is priceless. Whether you’re studying public health, education, or environmental science, the skills you’ll gain here directly connect to your field.
Then there’s the personal growth. Many volunteers arrive a bit shy or unsure, but by the time they leave, they’ve grown in confidence, communication skills, and cultural awareness. Plus, you’ll stand out to future employers because of the real-world experience you’ll bring home.
Q: Can you share an example of what volunteers experience in the programs?
Absolutely! Each program offers unique, hands-on experiences that make a real difference. For example, healthcare volunteers provide vital home-based care to those who need it most, offering support that directly impacts the community’s wellbeing.
In community development and environmental projects, volunteers focus on education initiatives that lead to long-term improvements. Environmental students can get involved in the eco-club, leading activities like litter clean-ups and making eco-bricks. These efforts not only tackle climate change but also teach sustainable practices to local students.
The women’s empowerment program is another standout. Volunteers work closely with adolescent girls, covering topics like education, health, safety, early pregnancy prevention, income generation, and building confidence.
Education is at the heart of it all—helping people develop skills that lead to better jobs, higher incomes, and improved health. It’s incredible to witness how volunteers contribute to this ripple effect of positive change, becoming a key part of the journey.
Q: Are there challenges volunteers face, and how do they handle them?
Culture shock is probably the biggest challenge. Life here is different, and adjusting can take time. Things like communication styles or even the concept of time—“now” might mean later today or even next week—can feel confusing at first.
But once you embrace these differences, you grow so much. Volunteers become more adaptable, open-minded, and understanding of the world. That’s something you carry with you long after you leave.
Q: How do volunteers typically adapt to the local community, and what cultural experiences are the most impactful?
Volunteers adapt really well. Of course, there are sometimes misunderstandings—that’s normal when you’re learning a new culture. You can’t fully understand life here in just a few weeks, but if you stay open and willing to learn, you’ll gain so much.
Q: What advice would you give to future volunteers considering joining the program?
Be open-minded and flexible. You’ll gain so much new knowledge and insight, but it’s okay if you don’t fully understand everything straight away—it’s all part of the learning process.
I also recommend doing your research before coming to Livingstone. This isn’t a holiday where you’ll just relax and take it easy. It’s an immersive experience where you’ll become part of the community and lifestyle here. Reading up on Zambia and the broader context of Africa before your trip can really help you prepare.
Q: What’s one thing students often don’t expect but take away from their time in Zambia?
The connections. It’s not just about learning the culture here; it’s also about meeting other volunteers from all over the world. You’ll leave with a broader perspective—not just about Zambia but about global issues like health, education, and sustainability.
Q: If you could share one message about Zambia, what would it be?
Zambia is beautiful, not just in its landscapes but in its people. The sense of community here is like nothing I’ve experienced anywhere else. Even in the face of challenges, people are generous, kind, and always ready to support one another.
